How To Prevent Fires in Your Home or Business
Whether you live in a single-family home or a high-rise apartment building, following these tips can help you avoid catastrophic fire damage –
What Happens After A Fire?
You don’t want a fire in your home or business. Fires often cause catastrophic damage and leave those affected in shock and disbelief. Of course, buildings and possessions can be destroyed. But too often lives are as well. The elderly, children, and pets are especially vulnerable. But so are regular healthy adults. Due to the devastating nature of fires, it’s highly advisable that you heed the following tips to prevent fires from happening.
5 Ways To Prevent Fires
Here are 5 ways to prevent fires, which can protect your home or business from significant damage —
Tip #1: Don’t burn candles
The risk is too great. A small flame from a tiny candle could ignite one flammable item such as a cloth, paper, or carpet, and then before you know it a fire is raging out of control in your home or business.
Tip #2: Don’t overload powerstrips or extension cords —
Many of the fires we see are from people putting too many electrical devices onto a powerstrip or extension cord. Often the powerstrip/extension cord will overhead, cause a spark, and then an inferno erupts and spreads.
Tip #3: Make sure plugs are inserted snugly and completely into their sockets
This is related to the powerstrip and extension cord issue described above. When plugs are not properly inserted into their sockets, arching can occur, which can generate heat, sparks, or a burning smell and is often the triggering event for a fire.
Tip #4: Don’t run appliances when you aren’t home
Dryers, for example, have very strict ventilation requirements. The lint that originates from the dryer can be a fire hazard. Even worse, if a dryer fire happens while you are away, your pets, if you have any, will be put in significant danger.
Tip #5: Don’t charge e-bikes or scooters inside your home or business
The batteries in these electronic vehicles are prone to overheating, especially when not charged properly. These batteries can create enormous fires that are extremely difficult to extinguish.
